Many open research questions relating to whether and how to scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) cannot be answered via small-scale field trials but rather require deployment at increasing project scales to build external validity of evidence. Because traditional research funding cannot support these scaled deployments, YCNCC scientists have taken the innovative step to partner with corporate CDR credit buyers to leverage their sustainability investments to incorporate research objectives and data transparency requirements into their commercial CDR offtake purchases. This morning’s first YCNCC session will explore how this “Research Through Deployment” can help improve the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of forest carbon measurement protocols.
