We intend to present a panel discussion on the topic of decarbonizing our existing building stock. The built environment is responsible for roughly 42% of global human generated carbon emissions, as a function of both operational and embodied carbon. As 80% of the buildings that will be occupied in 2050 already exist, decarbonizing the existing building stock will be critical to achieving a sustainable future. Our panelists – teachers and practicing architects with experience in rehabilitating existing buildings – will address this challenge both from a theoretical and practical perspective.
